Friday at the School.
The ex-Boda’s who had breakfast in the Boarding House on Friday morning declared that the quality of food was a vast improvement when compared to 1962. The morning school assembly was for me a highlight of the Reunion. After normal assembly (they still sing exactly the same hymns as in our day) the teachers leave the hall and the matrics take over – the object; to fire the school up in terms of the upcoming visit by Wynberg School. The atmosphere at the end was almost “war-like” – the hair on nape of the neck was bristling. I was almost motivated to go out and play (chess?). A truly moving experience.
The assembly was followed by tea at the Junior School (the mothers are outstanding!). Neil “Tommo” Thomson, head of English and the longest serving educator took our group on a fantastic tour of the high school – there is no comparison in terms of facilities when compared with our days – plenty of memories where evoked as we visited the old class rooms (finding old trap doors to get under classroom floors, flooding science labs, climbing the clock tower etc).
Afternoon tea in the Pavilion was followed by the usual professional, moving, Trooping of the Colour.
A large crowd watched Grey draw their hockey match on the magnificent floodlit astro (the old Rectory field with its’ matting wicket has undergone a dramatic remodelling!). The Hockey Old Boys had a gathering celebrating the 50th year of hockey at Grey.
Here is a collection of photo's, including ones from the 50th Hockey cocktail party, to capture the Friday of Reunion.
