55th Reunion - May 2017
The 55th Reunion was held in May 2017 and the various events were attended by 32 of (at the time) 99 surviving classmates.
Festivities kicked off as usual with drinks at the Old Grey Club on the Wednesday, where those that had booked Selley Concert tickets had to make a rush for the Feather Market Centre after staying a bit too long at the Club! The Selley Concert was another polished performance by the boys, and greatly enjoyed by those that attended.
Thursday had our only 2 golfers in the Old Grey Golf Day field teeing off bright and early at PE Golf Club - for the record Alf Levinthal came second in our Class! Well done to John Fryer. The Dinner was once again held in the Memorial Quad at the School, and attended by a record 623 Old Greys'. Speeches were kept to a minimum and school song being belted out by that number of old boys was electric. The few brave souls that made it back to Old Grey after the Dinner looked somewhat weather-beaten on the Friday.
Friday was the Classes busiest day - the Boarders had an 8am Breakfast call at the Boarding House. I believe the eggs served were much better than in their day. Our group made up a large proportion of an excellent Memorial Lecture delivered by John Young on the History of our founding father, John Paterson. It was a wonderful account of the history of the Grey, but further than that, the history of the City. This was followed by a tour of the Junior School hosted by Lindsay Pearson, just for our class, as this year marked the 60th year for most of us having left the Junior School. Woodwork is no longer part of the school curriculum, but the School has preserved the old Woodwork Room as a museum - original woodwork desks/small work vices, smell of wood etc. All that was missing was a blow up effigy of "Turkey". The afternoon was filled with a wonderfully laid-on tea in the Centenary Pavilion on the Pollock (Front) Field, and another professionally executed Trooping of the Colour. Maurice Lewis astounded us all by being able to recount every command of the Trooping.
The cherry-on-top was the Class of '62 Luncheon on Saturday, at Sticky Fingers Restaurant in Richmond Hill (covered below). I will say no more, watch the video (click on the link below). The weekend was rounded out by a narrow 24-22 win over a spirited Queens in wet and windy conditions.
You can download the comments of those that could NOT attend below, and see who attended. For a full class list, and contacts that we are looking for, please look at the "1962 Contacts" page. We will update the list sporadically.
Build our 60th Reunion in 2022 into your plans - how's that for positive thinking - good health to you all.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Gavin "Gus" Ferguson
PS. Thanks once again to Leo, Ron (yes, the CCMA reinstated him to the committee), Jeff and John for their time in the making of another successful Class of '62 Reunion gathering.
